About Restaurant de la Tour-de-gourze
The Tour de Gourze café-restaurant offers not only cheese specialities, but also cold meat platters and hearty desserts, such as meringues with double Gruyère cream, " home-made " fruit cakes on Sundays.
In wintertime, you can enjoy a good cabbage sausage with röstis.
It was in 1900 that the restaurant was built by the Bujard family, farmers - winemakers in Riex. Through this café, they found a way to sell their wine.
In 1922, they sold their restaurant to M et Mme Angèle and Daniel Banderet. Mr. and Mrs. Banderet had visited several establishments but chose this one because the "roof was good". They moved in in July 1922. At that time, there was no water, electricity or road. Electricity was installed in 1923 and telephone in 1931. Water was brought in 1939 and the road was built in 1971.
Following a storm in June 1942, fire destroyed the café and virtually nothing could be saved. Everything had to be rebuilt, more beautifully than before! The stone walls are original, and it was then that the café became a chalet. A member of the Swiss Alpine Club, Diablerets section, donated a table following the fire. This table can still be seen in the restaurant, so don't forget it the next time you visit. Despite the death of her husband, Mme Angèle Banderet continued to run the restaurant with the help of her daughter until 1980.
Although she had applied for her patent in 1968, it wasn't until 1980 that Mme Angèle Cossy-Banderet took over the business following the death of her mother. She undertook extensive renovations to improve the comfort of the café. She ran the restaurant until 2003, when she handed over to her granddaughter, Christine Martin-Cossy. The restaurant has thus been in the family for many years and is, for many Waldensians, synonymous with memories such as school runs, meals with friends or family, romantic rendezvous, etc...
